HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS
As the holiday season is vastly approaching us the Sheridan Police Department would like everyone to take special precautions to assure their personal safety and have an enjoyable holiday season. We have listed some tips to help keep you safe while shopping and driving.
Any Trouble/Problems: Do not hesitate to call 911 or ask someone to help if you are in trouble. If you think you’re being followed, go somewhere safe and call the Police.
Appropriate Attire: Dress casual with appropriate foot wear. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or flashy clothing.
Shop with Others: For safety, do not shop alone, especially at night. Be sure to shop with your friends or relatives, to reduce the risk of being a victim.
Teach Your Kids: Talk to your kids about what to do if they get separated. Tell them who and how to find someone that could help them, such as a store clerk or security person.
Communicate to Others: Tell family or friends where you are going and how long you will be gone. Let them know if your plans or agenda have changed. Make sure they have your phone number.
Park Smart: Park as close to the store as you can. Look for well lit parking spaces when possible.
Keep Your Car Locked: Keep your doors locked and windows closed. Remember to take your keys with you.
Be Alert: Remember where you parked your car by identifying something that will help remind you, such as a landmark or sign. Be aware of suspicious persons or vehicles that bring attention to themselves. Believe in you gut feelings.
Watch You’re Purse: Do not leave your purse unattended in a shopping cart. Keep your purse or wallet close to you at all times. Beware of the unexpected.
Avoid Cash: Do not flash large amounts of money in front of others. Use checks or credit cards when possible to reduce the possibility of being a victim.
Smart Use of Credit Cards: Beware of identity theft and keep receipts safe. Record credit card numbers at home and guard PIN numbers at all times. Remember, credit is safer than debit.
Hide Your Valuables: Store packages, lap tops, cell phones, GPS devices and purses in the trunk of the car before leaving the store’s parking lot. Never leave them visible inside your car.
Don’t Play Hero: Comply with a thief’s demands. Record an accurate description for law enforcement: height, weight, eye color, hair color, scars, tattoos, clothing, and license plate.
