Investigations
Detectives
The detectives assigned to this unit are generalist detectives, which means they will investigate all types of crimes - from violent crimes, such as assaults, robberies, and homicides, to property crimes, such as burglary, auto theft, and graffiti crimes.

Process
Although we are committed to investigating all reported crime in Sheridan, many crimes do not have clues that can be followed up on, such as a suspect description or name.

The commander in charge of investigations reviews all reported criminal incidents in Sheridan and will assign those cases containing important clues to a detective for follow-up investigation. The detective will develop a case filing, which will be presented to the District Attorney's Office.

The District Attorney's Office will either accept or decline the filing of criminal charges based on the reasonable likelihood of conviction. When a case is not assigned for follow-up investigation, it is inactivated. If additional information develops, the case is reactivated and is assigned to a detective.

How You Can Help
Citizens are in a good position to work in partnership with the Police Department in solving crimes. Knowing your neighbors, being aware of your surroundings, and notifying the police of unusual activities are some basic things you can do to reduce crime.

Reporting Suspicious Activity
If you are aware of any suspicious activity, don't assume that someone else will report it. You may use our tip line at 303-438-3236 if you wish to remain anonymous.
